How Can You Tell if a Holiday Treat is Good for Your Oral Health?

The holidays are about enjoying delicious meals with your family and friends, but that doesn’t have to mean throwing your oral health to the wayside to do that! In fact, there are plenty of dentist-approved seasonal treats that you can savor even more knowing that they aren’t going to harm your smile. Read on to learn how you can determine whether a food is tooth-healthy this holiday.

Is It Crunchy?

Crunchy snacks that aren’t high in carbohydrates, like mixed nuts, are high in calcium and protein, and their natural texture can help stimulate saliva production. As a result, your saliva will help neutralize acids in your mouth, minimizing your risk for enamel erosion and cavities. Additionally, the calcium and protein present in nuts can help strengthen and fortify your tooth and gum health!

Is It Cheesy?

Are you a fan of your aunt’s elaborate charcuterie board complete with different types of cheese from across the globe? You don’t have to give it up in the name of your oral health. In fact, cheese can help rebuild your tooth enamel, which can protect them from decay. The calcium, phosphate, and other minerals present in cheese, as well as its ability to help balance the pH level in your mouth can assist in fighting off harmful oral bacteria.

Is It Protein-Packed?

Turkey, ham, and prime rib roasts are all packed with protein, making them excellent for your oral and overall health. Key minerals found in meat, including phosphorus, iron, and zinc can not only strengthen your teeth, but also fortify the health of your gums. As a result, you may find yourself at a lower risk of developing the early signs of gum disease this holiday season.

Is It Going to Keep You Hydrated?

Enjoying a mimosa, hot toddy, or other alcoholic beverages are fine, but be sure to consume them in moderation. Remember to drink plenty of water, limiting your consumption of sugary and alcoholic beverages, as these can lead to enamel erosion and cavities, especially if you’re sipping on them throughout the day. The longer your teeth are exposed to alcohol and sugar, the higher your risk of an unexpected dental problem.

Remember That Moderation is Key

This holiday season, enjoy all of your favorite treats and make the most out of your time with your family. After all, that’s what the holidays are all about! Just remember that enjoying sugary, alcoholic, and carbohydrate-packed foods too frequently and often can increase your risk of dental concerns such as gum disease. Balance your risk by consuming these foods in moderation and staying hydrated can make your family time one you can look back on fondly, even after visiting your dentist for your next checkup!
