If it’s been a fair bit of time since your last dental appointment, you may be nervous about an upcoming one. You might not have been back in a dentist’s chair for months or even years, but knowing what to expect can help quell your anxieties. These routine cleanings are beneficial for your oral health, so you should feel confident in taking the steps you need to protect it. Keep reading to learn what happens on these visits.

Checking In

Whether you are heading to a new office or a returning patient, you’ll likely have to fill out some paperwork. This is to get your medical and dental history, along with any current health conditions. Being completely honest about this will help your dentist know better how to treat you and be aware of any complications that can get in the way of your care.

They will also take your dental insurance to help make this visit a bit more affordable, but it depends on your plan to know how much is covered.

Before and During Your Cleaning

As it’s time to be taken back, you may already start to hear some differences. Advancements in dental technology have made the tools used more efficient and quieter than before.

Next up, you’re likely to get some X-rays taken. They help show any problems that cannot be seen with the naked eye, and getting them is easier than ever. You’ll wear a lead vest and bite down on some plastic pieces while the digital images are taken.

Afterward, you’ll have a chance to bring up any questions or concerns you have, and once they are all answered, the actual cleaning can start. Depending on how long it’s been, it may be extended to help fully polish your pearly whites.

During this part, your dental hygienist will use state-of-the-art tools to remove any plaque and tartar. They’ll then floss between your teeth and ensure all harmful bacteria are removed. It’s normal to feel some discomfort or bleed a bit when this happens, but it doesn’t mean there is a problem. Your dentist will look at your mouth and see any issues need to be taken care of.

After You’re All Done

Once a good understanding of your oral health has been made, any problems found will be discussed. A treatment plan will be made to help get your smile back to pristine, and they may talk to you about how you can improve your at-home dental routine. Before you head out of the office, it’s important to schedule your next visit. You may be good to schedule another cleaning six months out or a bit sooner to take care of any issues that were found.

These preventive treatments don’t have to be a stressful experience. You should feel proud of yourself for taking the steps you need to keep your grin strong. Your dental office will be glad to have you in and help you get back to great oral health.
