Dental implants are considered the gold standard of tooth replacement. Whether you have one or more missing teeth, your dentist can use implants to help you eat, speak, and smile with complete confidence once again. Are you ready to start your journey? Your first step will be a consultation to ensure you’re a good candidate for treatment. During this initial visit, your dentist might throw around some unfamiliar words. Read on for a guide to dental implant terms you should know so you can understand exactly what’s going on.

Dental Implant

A dental implant, also known as a fixture, is an artificial tooth that is surgically inserted into the jawbone. It’s designed to support a dental prosthesis, such as a bridge, crown, denture, or other prosthetic. Once it fuses with the bone, it provides strong and durable results that patients can enjoy for several years!

Implant-Retained Dentures

Are you tired of your dentures slipping and sliding around? With this method, your dentures are anchored into the jawbone using several implant posts placed within the mouth. Not only does it stabilize the prosthetic teeth, but it helps stimulate the jawbone to keep it healthy and full.

Abutment

An abutment is a connector that your dentist will build onto or attach to the top of your dental implant. It’s an essential part that keeps your replacement tooth, such as the crown, bridge, or denture, firmly in place.

Crown

If you’ve ever broken or lost a tooth because of infection, decay, or injury, then you’re probably familiar with a dental crown. It’s a “cap” that fits over a weakened or damaged tooth, protecting it from further harm. It can also be attached to an abutment to restore the visible portion of your tooth.

Osseointegration

Osseointegration is a natural process that allows the dental implant to fuse with the jawbone. If successful, it results in a durable and strong replacement tooth, ensuring you can eat and speak pain-free.  The term comes from Greek and Latin words meaning “bone” and “to make whole”.

Titanium

Today, most dental implants are made of titanium, which is a lightweight but very durable metal. It has become extremely common to use this material because very few people are allergic to it. Plus, it fuses with the jawbone, providing strong results that last several years.

Zirconia

For those who are allergic to titanium, zirconia is an alternative option. Since these implants do not have prosthetic connections, the risk of bacteria growth is lower. In fact, patients might even experience better gum health with zirconia implants!

Research is a crucial part of the dental implant process. By reading the terms outlined above, you’ll be prepared and ready to start your journey with confidence!
