5 Ways to Reach Your New Year’s Resolution of Flossing More

Every year, countless people come up with resolutions that they’re looking to achieve over the next 365 days. Unfortunately, according to a study by the University of Scranton, only 8% of people end up achieving their New Year’s resolutions. So, why not make a resolution that’s easier to reach but still something to be proud of like flossing your teeth more often? To help you be in the small percentage of people who achieve their resolutions, check out these five tips that will help you incorporate flossing your teeth every day into your oral hygiene routine so you can maintain a healthy mouth.

Tip #1: Start Off Slow

Many people rush into their New Year’s resolutions headfirst. This causes them to get overwhelmed and quickly burn out. To avoid this, ease your way into flossing every day. Start out by doing it a few days per week and work your way up. Before you know it, cleaning between your pearly whites will be a normal part of your routine.

Tip #2: Refresh Yourself on the Proper Technique

To effectively remove plaque from your teeth, you have to make sure to use the right flossing technique. If you forgot how to do it or never knew the right way to floss in the first place, look up diagrams or videos that show you the proper way to hold the string and glide it between your teeth. This will allow you to get your pearly whites as clean as possible and lessen your chances of developing cavities.

Tip #3: Use the Right Products

People who have mobility issues like arthritis may find traditional floss difficult to maneuver. If this is the case with you, consider purchasing a water flosser to clean between your teeth. Additionally, if you do decide to use traditional floss, make sure to pick the type that best fits your needs.

Tip #4: Remind Yourself to Floss

Consider putting a sticky note on your bathroom mirror so you remember to floss every night before bed. You can also set reminders on your phone that goes off every night. Eventually, you’ll be so used to flossing that you won’t even need the reminders anymore.

It’s best to floss before bed, but doing it at all is better than nothing. Consider carrying dental floss in your bag, purse, or keeping some in your car so you can clean your teeth whenever you have a gap in your busy schedule.
