Continue reading to learn some helpful tips from your dentist in Midlothian on how to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

Brush Before Bed

Even though pretty much everyone is aware that brushing twice every day is necessary, often times people neglect brushing their teeth before bed. As tired as you may be from a long day of hard work, this is an optimal time to brush because you are ridding your mouth of germs and plaque that has accumulated throughout the day.

Use Proper Brushing Technique

If you aren’t brushing your teeth with a good technique, this can be almost as bad as not brushing your teeth at hall. By taking time to move your toothbrush in gentle, circular motions, you can remove the most plaque and prevent both tartar buildups and gingivitis.

Clean Your Tongue

Your teeth aren’t the only place where plaque builds up. Your tongue should be cleans on the regular. If you don’t, you could experience halitosis (bad breath) or other oral health problems. Whenever you brush your teeth, take some time to brush your tongue as well. You could also invest in an inexpensive tool called a tongue scraper.

Use Fluoridated Toothpaste

The most important thing to look for when choosing a toothpaste is fluoride. No matter the whitening power or flavor, if it doesn’t have fluoride, it isn’t doing much good for your smile. This natural mineral is a leading defense against tooth decay. It works by providing a protective barrier for your teeth as well as fighting germs that lead to decay.

Use Mouthwash

Many people skip mouthwash simply because they don’t know how they work or how beneficial they can be. It is great at reducing acid in the mouth, cleaning hard-to-reach areas, and remineralizing the teeth. Even though it isn’t a substitute for brushing and flossing, it can made a great addition to your oral hygiene routine.

Don’t Neglect Flossing

There are way too many people out there who neglect to floss every day. It isn’t just about releasing those pieces of popcorn from between your teeth. It is also a way to stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and lower gum inflammation. Flossing is an essential step for optimal oral health.

Stay Hydrated

You should be drinking water throughout the day, especially after meals. It washes away food debris, neutralizes harmful acids, and prevents dry mouth. It also continues to be the best thing that you can drink for your whole body. Instead of reaching for that can of cola for lunch, have a cold glass of water instead.

Limit Sugary Foods

Sugar converts to acid in the mouth and can erode your teeth’s protective enamel. This is what will cause cavities over time. Limit your consumption of things like acidic fruits, tea, coffee, dried fruit, soda, and sports drinks. Instead, reach for snacks and beverages like almonds, apples, carrots, cheese, green tea, and milk.

See Your Dentist

Your everyday habits are important for your dental health, but so are visits to the dentist. Going in for regular cleanings and checkups is necessary in order to remove calculus and catch issues before they become serious.

This October take some time to consider your oral hygiene and what you can do to make it better. Your smile will thank you!

About the Author

Dr. Jay Oza earned his dental degree from New York University and is committed to taking continuing education courses in order to enhance his knowledge in the field.
